What is phototoxicity?
(FOH-toh-tok-SIH-sih-tee) A condition in which the skin becomes very sensitive to sunlight. It can be caused by taking certain drugs, or rubbing certain essential oils (scented liquid taken from plants) or other topical agents onto the skin.
It is so amazing when the days get longer and warmer. Spring is here. We are looking forward to BBQS, hanging at the lake, or just enjoying the backyard. Whatever we are doing, we want to do it safely. We know essential oils are amazing. However they can be our downfall if used incorrectly. These oils are uplifting and beneficial but can be harmful if you are going to be in the sun. Here is a list of beautiful sun sensitive essential oils with safe dilution rates.
LEMON OIL - Do not use more than 12 drops per 30 ml or 2 Tablespoons of carrier oil
GRAPEFRUIT - max use is 24 drops per 30 ml or 2 Tablespoons carrier oil
LIME ( COLD PRESSED ) - No more than 4 drops per 30 ml or 2 Tablespoons
BERGAMOT - This is an especially phototoxic oil 2 drops is the max in 30 ml carrier oil If used incorrectly, you can be left with a nasty sunburn, skin blisters and scarring. To enjoy some of these oils safely while enjoying the aroma, add them to a diffuser
